Our History
Pring and Son was founded in 1895 by Sidney Pring, continued by his son Gerald and the business is carried on today by his grandson Martin Pring, assisted by his two sons Richard and Stuart. During the Second World War Gerald's carpentry skills were put to use by the Navy to construct wooden minesweepers on the Dart estuary, while Sidney carried the business in Hemyock.
Sidney Pring was a traditional builder and undertaker in the days when these two skills were often carried out in the same business, and this is still the case today, with Pring and Sons being well known local builders.
Sidney hand made all the coffins from local oak and elm in his workshop at Hemyock Castle, and Martin takes great pride in continuing this tradition today in his workshop at Hemyock. In addition to hand making coffins Martin hand digs grave sites where possible, and calls upon his many years of experience to ensure that all everything runs smoothly.
Martin, his father and grandfather have cared for many generations of local families, ensuring that each funeral is arranged and conducted in accordance with the wishes of the deceased and their family, however simple or elaborate.
Martin prefers to discuss the funeral arrangements with you in your own home, in familiar surroundings, making the process as easy as possible for the bereaved family.
